We all have those days; the ones where you hate your job and can only think about quitting. They’re natural, especially so considering how much time we actually spend working. But before you bite the bullet and quit, here are a few things to consider.
What makes you unhappy at work?
Before you walk out the door think about what’s making you unhappy in your current work place. Do you find the work mindless? Is there an issue with another employee? More often than not, the things that make us want to quit can be resolved. So have a heart to heart with your boss and express your problems.
A simple switch in seating or training across compartments can make a huge difference.
Do you have a safety net?
If you have a family, then quitting your job is a big move. You do need to put food on the table and pay for that roof above your head, after all. So consider how much you have tucked away and how long it’ll last.
You don’t want to walk out of work only to realise that you have no money to live on.
Think about your future boss
It’s tricky trying to explain the fact that you just quit your last job to potential employers. Especially if you’ve had quite a lot of jobs in a relatively short space of time. No business likes employing job hoppers. You’ll need to prove that you’re willing to commit.
It’s sometimes a better idea to hold on a little longer in your job, to improve your chances in the future.
What’s next?
If you’re considering leaving, think about this – what’s next?
Many people are blinded by how much they dislike their role that they fail to think about what they’ll do after they leave. Do you think that you can increased and better your skill set? Then maybe returning to education or volunteering might be beneficial. Need to get straight back into work? Then don’t be afraid to take something that isn’t your dream job to tide you over.
Here’s the bottom line – you need to make sure that you can get by without the job before you just up and leave. Sure, you don’t like it right now, but imagine what life will be like without that income. Try and resolve the issue first.
