Our client specialising in advanced microgrid controls, hybrid energy systems and grid stabilization technologies based in Gauteng are currently seeking the skills of a Microgrid Controls Engineer
Main job function
- The successful candidate will design, implement and optimize control systems for microgrids, with a special focus on ComAp Controllers and EPC Power Inverters.
- Design and implement control strategies for microgrids, including grid-connected, islanded, and black start operations.
- Develop and program ComAp controllers for microgrid applications, including generator and battery management.
- Work with EPC Power inverters to optimize power conversion, grid support functions, and energy storage applications.
- Configure and integrate SCADA, PLCs, and HMI systems for real-time monitoring and control of microgrids.
- Ensure seamless communication between controllers, inverters, using Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850, or MQTT protocols.
- Optimize energy dispatch algorithms to maximize efficiency, cost savings, and grid stability.
- Assist in the commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of microgrid projects.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, or Automation Engineering.
Criteria
- The ideal candidate will have strong experience in distributed energy resource (DER) integration, real-time control systems, and SCADA/PLC programming to ensure stable, efficient, and reliable microgrid operation.
- 3+ years of experience in microgrid control systems, DER integration, or automation engineering.
- Strong hands-on experience with ComAp controllers (e.g., InteliGen, InteliSys, InteliVision) an advantage
- Expertise in EPC Power inverters, including grid-forming and grid-following modes.
- Proficiency in SCADA systems, PLC programming, and real-time control.
- Experience with power electronics, energy storage systems (ESS), and hybrid power solutions.
- Strong understanding of protection schemes, power quality, and grid synchronization.
- Knowledge of cybersecurity best practices for energy control systems.

- Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
- Ability to work in dynamic and fast-paced environments.
- Willingness to travel within South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa for site assessments, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
