SHERQ Manager (SSSHERQM) – Equity Role

We have a vacancy for a SHERQ Manager Durban. The new SHERQ Manager will be responsible for end-to-end development of ISO standards for the organization. The SHERQ Manager will be require working alongside Group H&S Manager and Group Risk Manager to streamline process at a group level while using DBN site as R&D platform to disseminate new technologies. The successful incumbent will implement and drive the company`s SHERQ performance and related standards, systems, processes, and applicable legislative and regulatory requirements while promoting a SHERQ culture and awareness within the business

Key Performance Areas

  • Improved safety and well-being of employees via effective implementation of safety policies and procedures, conducting safety audits, and providing training to employees to minimize the risk of accidents and injuries, promoting a culture of safety.
  • Improved quality of services rendered and operational processes by implementing and managing a quality management system to ensure consistent delivery of high-quality services to customers.
  • Reduced incidents and associated costs by managing incidents and near-miss events, identifying root causes, and implementing corrective actions to prevent future occurrences, minimizing the associated costs, such as insurance premiums, downtime, and reputational damage.
  • Improved environmental performance by implementing and managing an environmental management system and promoting sustainable practices.
  • Improvement security via effective daily management of security processes and service providers.
  • Increased stakeholder (customers, investors, and employees) confidence by ensuring compliance with regulations, promoting safety, delivering high-quality services, and minimizing environmental impact.

Key Responsibilities-Operations

  • Develop, implement, and maintain the Safety, Health, Environmental, Risk and Quality (SHERQ) management system in line with the company’s policies, procedures, and applicable legislation.
  • Ensure compliance with local regulations and international standards, including ISO 45001 (previously OHSAS 18001), ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 standards.
  • Promote health and safety through competency checks, health and safety programs and training, and ensure that all staff are aware of their responsibilities under relevant legislation.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with employees, contractors, and other stakeholders on SHERQ matters and promote a culture of safety awareness and environmental responsibility.
  • Develop and implement training programs to educate employees on SHERQ procedures and best practices and monitor their effectiveness.
  • Conduct investigations of incidents and near-miss events and implement measures to prevent future occurrences.
  • Conduct regular Occupational Health, Safety and Environment compliance site assessments, inspections and audits within a legislative framework to identify potential hazards and areas of non-compliance.
  • Conduct regular risk assessments and safety audits of the warehouse operations and ensure that corrective actions are taken where necessary.
  • Conduct SHERQ meetings to monitor compliance and corrective actions and provide reports on compliance and performance metrics.
  • Ensure compliance with the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, including registering and reporting incidents and following up on claims
  • Write up safe work procedures and performance reports and engage with operations around the implementation of recommendations to ensure that all staff are aware of the relevant health and safety risks and controls
  • Ensure compliance with the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act, including registering and reporting incidents and following up on claims.
  • Manage the quality management system to ensure the consistent delivery of high-quality services to customers.
  • Manage the security function within the business, including the development and implementation of security procedures and the monitoring of compliance.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with regulatory agencies, industry groups, and other stakeholders to stay informed of SHERQ trends and best practices.
  • Prepare reports on SHERQ performance and provide recommendations for improvement to senior management.

  • Accident Rates: Measures the frequency of workplace accidents, providing insights into the safety performance of the organization
  • Experience Modification Rate (MOD Rate): Measures the organization’s claims history and is used in the calculation of workers’ compensation premiums
  • Number of Safety Audits Performed: Measures the frequency of safety audits conducted to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations
  • Number of Safety Violations Found: Measures the instances of safety violations identified during inspections, indicating areas that require improvement
  • Number of Corrective Actions Taken: Measures the effectiveness of the organization’s response to safety issues and incidents
  • Number of Safety Training Hours Completed: Measures the investment in employee safety training and development
  • Number of Safety Inspections Performed: Measures the frequency of safety inspections conducted to identify and address potential hazards
  • Number of Safety Incidents: Measures the frequency of safety incidents, providing insights into the overall safety performance of the organization

Qualifications and Experience

  • National Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety / Environmental / Risk / Quality Management or equivalent qualification.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in a SHERQ management role, preferably in a warehouse or logistics environment.
  • Knowledge of local and international regulations, including ISO 45001, ISO 14001 and ISO 9001.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and stakeholders.
  • Strong leadership and team-building skills, with the ability to manage a team of SHEQ professionals effectively.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify and mitigate risks effectively.
  • People, change management, and empowerment skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with other teams and stakeholders to achieve shared goals.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Computer literacy, with proficiency in Microsoft Office and other relevant software tools.
